A mattress is only as good as the base it sits upon.
A mattress base isn’t just a frame. It’s a key component of your sleep system. Bases with worn slats, legs, side rails, or other critical support components will dramatically affect the feel of a mattress. Without the proper support underneath, even the best mattress can lose comfort and performance over time. Here are the benefits of a mattress base at a glance:
- Prevents sagging
- Improves support
- Extends mattress lifespan
- Promotes airflow
- Adds stability

Bed Bases & Mattress Frames FAQs
To find the right bed base for your mattress, the first step is to ensure compatibility. Most memory foam and hybrid mattresses work best with an adjustable base, or a bed frame with a mattress foundation. Then, consider your comfort preferences. If you want a customizable position for reading or relaxing, an adjustable base might be the right fit. Or, if you prefer a simple, low-profile setup, a bed frame and foundation offers strong, consistent support.
Finally, check practical details like height, room size, and warranty requirements to ensure your base fully supports your mattress and fits comfortably in your room. From there, you’ll be able to choose a base that matches your preferences and sleep style.
Yes, it’s often recommended to have a base for your mattress. A mattress base, whether an adjustable base, or bed frame paired with a mattress foundation, provides consistent, even support that helps prevent your mattress from sagging and extends its lifespan. Not having a bed base for your mattress can cause it to sag or become moldy or mildewy due to a lack of airflow, which can void warranty.
Both a mattress foundation and a box spring serve a similar purpose, which is to elevate your mattress, prevent sagging, and extend its lifespan. However, the key difference between the two lies in their construction. Box springs entered the scene first, and were typically paired with innerspring mattresses to provide a little more give for these firmer mattress types. They feature a wooden frame and a series of boxsprings to help make innerspring mattresses feel softer.
A mattress foundation is the box spring’s modern counterpart, featuring a similar wooden or metal frame but a series of wooden slats instead of springs. Foundations are better equipped for supporting the mattresses most of us sleep on today, such as memory foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses. Foundations are typically more durable and longer-lasting, and provide a smooth, firm surface for your mattress to rest on.
It depends. If you choose the Layla® Adjustable Bed Base, you won't need the Layla® Foundation. However, the Layla® Bed Frame requires a foundation.
Yes, if your bed already has built-in slats, you don't need a mattress foundation. Slats are recommended to be spaced 4-inches apart or less for proper support. Slats spaced more than 4-inches apart typically do not offer proper support and can void warranties.
